Caribe Hilton celebrates 70th anniversary of the piña colada

The event will feature a wide variety of activities and experiences.

The Caribe Hilton Hotel and The Rum Lab have announced their collaboration to mark the 70th anniversary of the piña colada cocktail, created by bartender Ramón “Monchito” at the hotel’s Beachcomber Bar on July 10, 1954.

The event will take place July 10-14, promising an “unparalleled experience that will combine fun, education, and a true immersion into the rich history and culture of piña colada and rum in Puerto Rico,” organizers said. “All cocktail lovers over the age of 18 will find the event appealing and family-friendly.”

The event will feature a wide variety of activities and experiences, including:

Conrad Hilton vision and experience: Will mimic the original idea Conrad Hilton had at the hotel that guests arrived at the hotel and were received by “Piña Colada and Calypso Band.” (Wednesday-Sunday. Time varies) 

Art exhibition: “Arte en el Hilton,” an art project that has been exhibiting for for more than 20 years, will exhibit “El Sabor De Nuestra Piña” (“The Flavor of Our Pineapple”) show by three local artist – Carlos Davila Rinaldi, Eduardo Cabrer and Orlando Meléndez – starting on Wednesday. Curated by Sylvia Villafane of Galeria Petrus. 

Piña colada tasting: The idea is to have four to six bars serving variations of piña colada, as different types of rums will be used. The hotel will be responsible for the staff inside the booths, who will sell or share samples of the cocktails with attendees. 

Education: Seminars about Puerto Rican rum and the history of the piña colada will be held most days, supported by Rums of Puerto Rico.

Entertainment: Live bands or music. 

Bartender competition: A bartender competition will be held to “find a new cocktail that will hopefully become as important as the piña colada.” Up to eight bartenders will be invited to participate.

Book signing: The author of “Puerto Rico Rum-Clopedia” will be present at the event, signing copies of the book. “This book offers an in-depth and fascinating look at the history of rum in Puerto Rico, including details on the creation and evolution of the piña colada.”

The Rum Lab celebrates 70 years of the Piña Colada

Event organiser The Rum Lab is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Piña Colada at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico – which claims to be the cocktail’s birthplace.

The celebration will run over four days from 10-14 July and will feature a variety of activities and experiences.

On 10 July, complimentary Piña Coladas will be served on arrival at the hotel, with a welcome from a Calypso band and live DJs. There will also be the opening presentation of art show ‘El Sabor De Nuestra Piña’, which showcases work from local artists Carlos Dávila Rinaldi, Eduardo Cabrer and Orlando Meléndez, and was curated by Sylvia Villafañe of Galeria Petrus.

Between 11-12 July, there will be a seminar from Rums of Puerto Rico’s ambassador, while on 13 July – which is World Rum Day – Rums of Puerto Rico will host a bartending competition and a Piña Colada tasting experience.

The competition will see eight bartenders tasked with creating a new cocktail that the Rum Lab says will ‘hopefully become as important as the Piña Colada’.

The tasting experience, meanwhile, will feature six to eight bars serving variations of Piña Colada, with different rums used.

In addition, there’ll be a book signing from the author of Puerto Rico Rum-Clopedia and The Rum Lab’s president Federico José Hernández, which offers an in-depth look at the history of rum in Puerto Rico.

To close the week on 14 July, jazz player Humberto Ramírez will perform a special show, alongside an open bar for special ticket holders.

Hernández said: “We are excited to present this unique event in collaboration with the Caribe Hilton.

“With the combination of embracing Conrad Hilton Vision, the Piña Colada tastings, the book signing of Puerto Rico Rum-Clopedia, live entertainment, and the bartender competition, we offer attendees an unforgettable experience and an opportunity to celebrate the rich history and culture of Piña Colada and rum in Puerto Rico.”

The Piña Colada was said to have been created by bartender Ramón ‘Monchito’ Marrero at the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar on 10 July 1954.

The Caribe Hilton opened in 1949 and is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Recently, The Rum Lab also hosted the inaugural Women Leading Rum conference, which took place in Madrid.

Publican libro “Puerto Rico Rum-Clopedia” sobre la historia del ron en la isla

La importancia que ha tenido el ron en el crecimiento económico y en la historia de Puerto Rico, desde que se estableció el primer trapiche cañero en Añasco en 1523 hasta nuestros días, es algo que no se debería olvidar y de lo que habría que hablar más a menudo.

Con esto en mente el empresario puertorriqueño Federico José Hernández decidió reunir en un libro la historia de este espíritu en la isla ante el resurgimiento desde hace unas décadas de la afición por el ron en Puerto Rico. Fue así que nació el libro “Puerto Rico Rum-Clopedia”.

“La idea del libro surge en 2019, conversando con Alexandra Salgado quien era directora del Programa de Rones de Puerto Rico en ese momento. Yo quería compartir una narrativa del renacimiento que está sucediendo en la industria del ron en la isla y explicar un poco la importancia de esta industria, que fue el corazón de nuestra economía por muchísimos años”, explicó Hernández, quien lleva involucrado desde hace muchos años con la industria del ron produciendo eventos locales e internacionales como Taste of Rum y es fundador del sitio web TheRumLab.com. “Creo que esa narrativa bonita es importante que la compartamos”.

El libro tiene 215 páginas, ilustradas con más de 700 fotografías históricas que complementan la interesante historia escrita. Inicialmente, el libro fue publicado en inglés, pero se está trabajando en una versión en español.

“La meta, genuinamente, era crear un libro que se disfrutara como un ‘coffee table book’ pequeño, que fuera bonito, y que el puertorriqueño o la persona que lo tuviera se sintiera orgulloso de tenerlo en la mesa de su sala”, añadió el empresario. “Al leerlo se darán cuenta de cómo el ron está bien arriba, entre todas las cosas espectaculares que hacemos aquí en la isla, y que es algo que siempre estará en nuestra historia”.

De hecho, a medida que el autor trabajaba en el libro, junto con una serie de personas que lo ayudaron en la edición y en la recopilación de la información, tuvo que decidir parar, debido a tanta información que había del tema y que era digna de contar. “En un momento dije ‘aquí cierro este libro’. No podía seguir añadiéndole información, porque nunca lo iba a terminar. Es por eso que decidí inmediatamente ponerle versión número uno, ya que estoy trabajando en la segunda versión, donde va a incluir otra narrativa y más información que he recopilado”, detalló Hernández.

Presentación del libro

“Puerto Rico Rum-Clopedia” fue presentado el domingo, 9 de julio, ante un nutrido grupo de personas que asistieron al evento “Piña Colada Day” en el Caribe Hilton, donde se celebraron los 69 años de la creación de la piña colada en dicho recinto. Allí se encontraban familiares, colegas y amigos de Hernández, quien se ha destacado por casi dos décadas a promover el ron de Puerto Rico en la categoría premium, así como por ser un embajador del ron a nivel mundial.

Luego de unas breves palabras en las que explicó el génesis de este libro, Hernández les dio paso a varias personas para que hicieran la introducción. La primera fue Terestella González Denton, exsecretaria de la Compañía de Turismo de Puerto Rico y prima del autor, quien leyó unos poemas que aparecen en el libro, incluyendo uno de Hernández y otro de su tatarabuelo, Ferdinand Cestero, quien también trabajó en la industria del ron en la isla.

Acto seguido, subió a la tarima localizada frente a la barra Caribar, Frank C. Stipes, presidente de Rones Superiores de Puerto Rico y un experto del licor nacional de la isla. Con una energía envidiable y de manera clara y concisa, Stipes hizo un breve resumen del libro, enfocándose en unos capítulos donde ocurrieron varios eventos claves en la historia de la industria del ron localmente como la prohibición del alcohol en la isla en 1917 y la finalización de la misma en 1933. Según Stipes, estos momentos marcaron un antes y un después en la isla y llevaron a que la importancia del ron fuera evolucionando hasta convertirse en lo que es hoy día.

De la misma forma, Ramón Díaz, embajador de Rums of Puerto Rico, narró brevemente el nacimiento de la Piña Colada en el Caribe Hilton, y cómo se convirtió en la bebida nacional de la isla hasta llegar a ser uno de los cocteles más vendidos a nivel mundial. Todo esto ocurrió, mientras el público presente disfrutaba y tomaban distintas versiones de la piña colada, creada por varios mixólogos que se encontraban en la actividad.

El libro “Puerto Rico Rum-Clopedia” estuvo disponible a la venta durante la actividad, donde el autor aprovechó para dedicar y firmar las copias de aquellas personas que se lo pedían. Además, ya está a la venta en Amazon, y estará disponible en Casa Bacardí, así como en las librerías The Bookmark en San Patricia Plaza, Santurce y Hatillo. El costo del libro es de $29.99.

Su combinación refrescante y tropical de jugo de piña, crema de coco y hielo, le ha merecido a la Piña Colada, convertirse en uno de los cócteles favoritos en Puerto Rico y el mundo.

De hecho, la popularidad de este cóctel boricua, le ha hecho merecedor de que se reconozca internacionalmente al 10 de julio como el Día Nacional de la Piña Colada.

El origen de un gran cóctel

Como suele suceder con las invenciones, la creación de la Piña Colada no estuvo libre de controversias, ya que al menos, tres cantineros boricuas se disputaron el título de ser su gestor. Lo cierto es que fue en Puerto Rico donde se creó la receta por primera vez hace 69 años y que el Hotel Caribe Hilton de San Juan, figura como el escenario de origen de dos de las cuatro versiones o leyendas sobre su invención.

La primera leyenda se remonta al 1800, cuando el pirata puertorriqueño Roberto Cofresí sirvió una bebida con ron y frutas tropicales a su tripulación para levantarles la moral. De esta no hay muchos más datos.

La segunda historia sobre el origen de la Piña Colada, coloca a Ricardo García, un cantinero del Caribe Hilton, como la persona a quien se le ocurrió improvisar la preparación ante la escasez de coco. Mientras que la tercera historia, la más consistente y aceptada, atribuye a Ramón “Monchito” Marrero —también barman en la “Beachcombo Bar”, en la playa del Hotel Caribe Hilton en San Juan— como el autor de la versión que conocemos hoy.

Se dice que fue un 10 de julio cuando en el mencionado bar, “Monchito” —quien entonces tenía 13 años de experiencia en el mundo de la coctelería—, elaboró por vez primera la Piña Colada, tras un encargo oficial. Dicha petición lo mantuvo sumido en el proceso creativo por tres largos meses hasta que dio con la receta perfecta. La misma que vendía a razón de 10 diarias en la barra de la playa del Hotel Caribe Hilton.

Trece años más tarde, el refrescante cóctel no solo se había convertido en la bebida nacional de Puerto Rico, junto a nuestro Coquito, sino que también, ya era reconocida alrededor del mundo. Por suerte, en esta ocasión don “Monchito” pudo disfrutar en vida, de haber sido profeta en su tierra, ya que localmente se le reconoció de manera oficial como su creador. Esto, a pesar de otra controversia por su autoría —la cuarta leyenda—, esta vez suscitada por la “Barrachina”, una hermosa barra que ubica en la calle Fortaleza en el Viejo San Juan, que reclamó la autoría del famoso cóctel.

La reafirmación de su gestor

En 1986, el hotel Washington Hilton llevó a cabo un concurso internacional de ‘bartenders’ para mezclar la perfecta Piña Colada y Monchito fue uno de los jueces y la hospedería aprovechó la ocasión para rendirle honores a su creatividad. Luego, en 1989, con una carrera de 35 años en el mundo de la coctelería junto con su creación de fama internacional, don “Monchito” fue invitado por el Thitch Bartender Club de Holanda, a la inauguración del “Different Drinks Bar”, en donde fue nombrado “Socio Honorario”, como resultado de su gestión creativa.

Ciertamente, no importa quién sea su autor, lo importante es que la Piña Colada es una bebida local que ha trascendido a nivel internacional, convirtiéndose en uno de los cócteles más afamados y aclamados del mundo, y se ha posicionado entre los 10 cócteles preferidos a nivel global.

La celebración oficial del Hotel Caribe Hilton

Siendo el hotel donde nació la Piña Colada hace ya 69 años, la gerencia de la hospedería creó dos días de celebración especial, iniciando el domingo 9 de julio con el “Piña Colada Day” de 2:00 p.m. a 6:00 p.m. Se trata de una tarde de ‘tasting’ del famoso cóctel en el área del Caribar, donde los asistentes podrán deleitar su paladar con piñas coladas realizadas con rones puertorriqueños de cinco destilerías locales y disfrutar de música en vivo.

El lunes 10 julio, día oficial de la Piña Colada, la hospedería llevará a cabo —también en el Caribar— una competencia de “bartenders” para buscar el ganador de la mejor creación de la Piña Colada, pero donde el ‘garnish’ o los elementos decorativos jugarán un papel importante en la contienda coctelera. Esta es la razón por la cual la competencia lleva por nombre “The Garnish War”.
